8 Signs You Need a New Roof ASAP
January 10, 2023

A roof plays a vital role in protecting your home and family from the elements. Because of this, you should always be aware of your roof's condition. Knowing the warning signs of a roof that needs replacement can save you time and money in the long run. Here are some red flags that tell you it's time to call a roofing service.

1. Age of the Roof

One of the first indicators that you may need a new roof is the age of your current one. The average lifespan of a roof is about 20-25 years for asphalt shingles, but other materials like metal may last 50 years with care, according to IBIS World. If you've owned your home for more than this amount of time, then it's likely that you'll have to plan for a replacement over repairs. You should also check for any damage or signs of wear and tear.

2. Missing Shingles

If you notice missing shingles on your roof, then you need to replace them as soon as possible. When shingles are lost, the underlayment and other areas become vulnerable to weather damage like heavy wind, rain, and snow. Shingles may begin to fall off when the material becomes brittle or when the bond between them and the roof has been compromised. Your roofing service contractor can tell you if the missing shingles reveal larger underlying issues that need to be addressed.

3. Curled or Buckled Shingles

Similarly, if your roof's shingles are buckled or curled, your roof has gone past its prime. This buckling is usually caused by a buildup of moisture that rots the shingles from underneath. It also happens when your attic doesn't have sufficient ventilation. Unaddressed, the moisture may seep through and cause damage to other parts of your home.

4. Algae Stains

Algae stains are often caused by excessive moisture and humidity, so if you can see dark streaks on your roof, that means water has started to penetrate the underlying layers. It also needs sunlight to survive, which is why it appears in warmer climates or near trees and other plants. It's important to get these spots treated as soon as possible as algae can damage the shingles and cause leaks if left unchecked.

5. Sagging Roof

If you look up at your roof and notice it's sagging in certain areas, replacement is the only option. This sag usually happens when the underlying structure becomes weak due to water damage or the accumulation of snow and ice. Sagging roofs often lead to collapse if not addressed immediately.

6. Daylight Visible in the Attic

If you can see daylight coming through your roof into the attic, this means that there are large gaps between the shingles and your roof is no longer protecting your home. This happens when shingles are missing or have become damaged. A professional roofing service will be able to identify the source of the issue and help you decide on a course of action.

7. Leaks

Leaks are one of the most common signs that you need a new roof. If you notice water accumulating on your ceiling or any damp patches, it means there's an issue with your shingles or underlying layers. This needs to be addressed right away. You may notice discoloration, mold, or mildew as well. Get a roofing service to inspect the leak and replace any damaged areas.

8. Pests

If you've noticed an increase in pests, it could be a sign that there are holes or cracks in your roof. Pests such as rodents and birds often nest in these areas and can cause further damage to your shingles and other components of the roof. Such pests will make their presence known by leaving behind droppings in the attic and on the roof. Over time, rodents may chew through the roof insulation and other materials, so it's important to have a roofing service contractor inspect and prevent any further damage.

Knowing the signs of a failing roof is key to protecting your home. If you've noticed any of these warning signs, then don't wait to get help before the issue becomes worse.
